Materials needed for traveling from Kenya to Kampala:
1. Raspberry Swirl Cookies
2. Veggie Tales Jonah book
3. Keen eye to dodge the Zebras, goats, and cattle
4. Prayer
5. And of course watermelon juice
What an amazing week….I have just been in the presence of some of the most amazing missionaries, including the first one to be sent out from Sheridan Hills Baptist Church. ( You can read more about this on the newsletter that is attached to this email. ) I am traveling back to Kampala with my supervisors and their two little girls. We left Brakenhurst (the place where the conference was held) around 10am on Sunday and have only been traveling 10 minutes when our whole tire flings off and now we are skidding down the mountain on our rim. Some British Kenyan (who was coming from a climbing contest) saw it and stopped to help us. He helped us find the tire from the valley and took my supervisors wife, the two girls and I into town while we waited for the tire to get put back on. So while we were waiting I took the girls to the playground and got to hear the whole Thriller CD while sliding down the slides. It was just a quick fix and needed to go into the mechanic so we were then delayed 2 more days.
Finally we got back in the car about Noon on Tuesday, but before we began we went to pick up lunch and some Watermelon Juice for my supervisor who was super sick and needed to rehydrate himself to drive the latter half of the journey.
The journey from Kenya to Kampala will take us 2 days and four police stops.
So we finally got on the road only to be stopped at a police check point and get in trouble for our car registration paper being a day late cause of the car problem, but God saw favor on us (thanks for your prayers during my prayer challenge, you can read more about that on my journal on my website) and we were able to get through that check point. But not to long after did we get pulled over for “speeding” (they didn’t even have one of those clocking devices). As the police was threatening to fine us I prayed and right after I was done praying the officer let us go. We finally made it to our cabin that night after dodging the police, Zebra, goat, and cattle. We also made a stop on the equator and took a pic (the pic is included in my attached newsletter).
Then on Wednesday ( my supervisor now revived from the watermelon juice) we made it to the boarder of Kenya and Uganda and had to get all our passports stamped and our vehicle had to get the papers stamped, but remember that it was a day late cause of car issues. So in order to get through the border patrol they wanted us to pay a bribe of like 20,000 shillings. But as you saw at the top of the list materials needed and the number one item was raspberry swirl cookies, we handed those to the border patrol and said a couple of words and was able to be on our way at a small cost. It is crazy how the government system works over here. But this was not the last bribe paid to get us home. We would be stopped one more time for “speeding” (but this time they had a clocking device, I honestly don’t know if it worked) and we really had to haggle our way out of 140,000 shilling fine. My supervisor had to throw out a couple of names, give them a Veggie Tales Jonah book, and promise to send a Bible their way before we would be able to get in the car and make it home by 10pm. Even though we encountered all these obstacles we were still able to see the humor in it all and Africa did not win today!!!
AWA (Africa Wins Again) is a saying we have here and say it when we are frustrated helping us keep our cool.
P.S. Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers. I definitely think of you all often and every time I think of you I thank my God for the prayers and support of the saints back home and abroad! I love you all and couldn’t do this without all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lord grant me success in reaching the next generation….. Hey all, I have to just tell you all that God is GOOD. The power went off last night and I woke up and realized it and prayed that God would turn it back on before I got out of bed so I wouldnt have to deal with the stuff in the fridge....and He was faithful. |
